In this series I interview some of my favourite bloggers and delve a bit deeper into their blogging life. This week I’m pleased to introduce Kelly from It’s a Tink Thing. Kelly has also set up a second blog recently so she’s keeping herself busy. Over to you Kelly…..
What made you make the jump into the blogging world?
I first began blogging ten years ago as a way to talk to myself legitimately, as well as show off some of my paper crafting. Then children happened and I didn’t have time to write, but I did do a photo blog of my son’s first year and then again when I had my daughter. When my daughter was diagnosed with autism last year, I felt I needed an outlet for my thoughts and feelings, and my blog ‘It’s a Tink Thing’ was born, soon followed by a Facebook page. I have recently given up work to care for my daughter, and wanted to write more about non-autism related stuff, so have just set up School Runs and Shopping Trolleys.
What was the inspiration behind your blog name?
It’s a Tink Thing came about because Tink is my daughter’s nickname (Tinkerbell or Tinker, depending on her mood…) and I didn’t want to use her real name in the blog. There are so many things she does that I’ve said, “oh, it’s a Tink thing…” that the name came easily. School Runs… came to me when I was quickly trying to set up my new blog ready for Blogtober 16 and I was trying to think of what my new life as a stay-at-home mum might consist of!
Is blogging your main career or just a hobby?
At the moment, very much a hobby. But who knows? Maybe one day I’ll try to make something more of it. I can’t believe anyone wants to read my ramblings, let alone make money from it! I’ve always wanted to be a writer of some sort, so it would be good!
What topics do you blog about?
On ‘Tink Thing’ it’s mainly autism and what it’s like to be a parent of a child with special needs. ‘School Runs…’ is a more general blog about life and parenthood!
If you didn’t have your blog what would be your dream job?
As I mentioned, I’ve always wanted to be a writer, so to be a published author would be amazing. Otherwise, a photographer.
If you aren’t blogging what could we find you doing?
Running round after my children, mostly! And when I’m not doing that, I like watching TV, reading crime novels, photography and catching up on sleep.
What’s been your biggest blog success story?
Both my blogs are still quite new, but to know that someone has read them is a success for me! My old blog used to feature in the top 20 crafting blogs back in the day, so was pretty successful.
What would be your advice to anyone looking to start their own blog?
I’m not sure I’m in a position to give advice – rather I’m seeking it at the moment to get my newer blog off the ground! I think if it’s a more personal blog, write from the heart and be honest, as there will be so many other people in a similar situation who will take comfort from knowing they’re not alone.
Lastly, can you tell us something that people may not know about you?
My secret ambition is to sing on stage in a musical production, but I’d never actually have the nerve to do it!
