Here in the UK we’re lucky enough to receive health care free of charge through the National Health Service (NHS), but sometimes this care may not be accessible right when you need it, be that due to waitlists or various other reasons. Did you know that a staggering 3.3 million people were on the NHS waiting list at the end of 2015?

What people may not realise is that you can get private health insurance, for minimal monthly costs, to cover your family anytime they are ill or need hospital treatment.

My husband was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and it was so comforting to know that we had private health insurance to fall back on during his diagnosis and subsequent treatment periods.

Here’s a few reasons that I’ve come up with as to why private health insurance is a great idea for your family:

Choose where you want to receive care. Private health care policies often cover hospital visits, include a much shorter wait list than the typical NHS, and even sometimes offer a wider range of care. Another huge benefit to purchasing your own private health insurance policy is that often you have the freedom and flexibility to select your consultant and preferred hospital. While there are many outstanding policy options, it is important to note that this type of coverage is best for those who have minor illnesses or injuries that can be cured over a short period of time.

Accommodate your needs and budget. When choosing your own private health insurance, you have the flexibility to purchase a plan that fits your family’s needs and budget. Many health insurance companies understand that everyone is unique and want to pick and choose the level of coverage that is best suited for them and their family. For example, coverage can be purchased for cancer care, psychiatric treatment, dental or optical care, physiotherapy, and even home nursing care. You have the freedom to choose what you do and don’t need when customising your policy.

Jump the queue.  See a doctor when you need it – not when the waiting list is open. In my opinion one of the best perks of owning your own private health insurance policy is not having to worry about waiting a long time to receive proper care and treatment. Did you know that by purchasing private health insurance many outpatient, day-patient and in-patient treatments are included? Take control of your health with having the power to make independent decisions that will work best for you and your family when someone has fallen ill or is injured.

It is a common misconception that purchasing private health insurance will cost an outrageous amount per year, but you have nothing to lose by looking into purchasing some additional coverage for your family members. With so many policy options available, such as choosing your consultant and preferable hospital to the ability to be cared for without the hassle of waiting in a long line, now is the time to look into purchasing that all important private health care for your family.
