Originating in America, cake smash photoshoots have been taking the UK by storm as parents look for a fun and memorable way to mark their child’s first birthday.

The craze involves letting your one year old loose with a giant cake while being pictured by a photographer, creating some cheeky, adorable and messy shots that you can treasure forever.

Not one to miss out on an adorable photo opportunity I booked Max in for his very own cake smash photoshoot to help us celebrate his 1st birthday. Lucky for me I knew just the lady for the job and booked in with Lisa from Pixhalls Photography who was the very talented lady we first met when Max was just 10 days old when we went for a newborn photoshoot.

Regular followers of my Instagram account will know that I have a huge obsession with monochrome, there’s just something so simple, yet elegant and stylish, about black and white so this was the obvious theme that we went for.

The photoshoot was relaxed and informal. Lisa did a great job with all of the black and white props that she had to order in especially for us and the cake was stunning and really was the star of the show!

We kicked things off with some natural shots of Max. He’s pretty relaxed when it comes to having his photo taken, he’s grown up with me taking photos of him so he’s a real natural in front of the camera. I can’t quite get over how grown up he looks in them and they’ve made me realise he’s not my little baby anymore, he’s growing into a proper little boy.

Then came the messy part – the cake smash itself. I wasn’t sure how Max would react to being let lose with a cake so I was slightly nervous as it was put down in front of him.

He was tentative at first, unsure what to make of it, opting to gently poke at it rather than dive right in. But after a few minutes andย multiple renditionsย of “The Wheels on the Bus” to get him giggling there was no stopping him.

He sat with the cake for roughly 30 minutes, putting huge chunks of icing in his mouth with one hand, whilst bashing the cake with a wooden spoon with the other hand.

The sugar rush was starting to kick in so we decided to take the cake away and put him in the cutest little baby roll top bath for a good old wash down, a perfect way to end the perfect shoot.

If you’re considering booking a cake smash photoshoot then I really recommend you do. I couldn’t be happier with our final images and they are ones that will put a smile on my face for years to come.
